When I first saw the original Matrix in 1999, it was the greatest thing I’d ever seen, even without completely understanding it. We hadn’t really seen fighting like that outside of kung-fu films and even then, it hadn’t really ever been combined with the supernatural/bullet time aspects. Blade (1998) is the only other thing that comes to mind. So when The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were announced, everybody just felt like they hit the jackpot. “The fighting, the message, the music? There’s going to be MORE of it?” Little did we know, it was all just going to be terrible. Not only that, after a few years I’d heard a few rumors and eventually read some articles stating that the original was even a rip-off of a Grant Morrison comic book, ruining my entire idea of the freaking movies. Thanks, Cracked. And when I say “rip-off,” I don’t mean in the way there are major similarities between that and Dark City (1998) or something; I mean completely stealing ideas. But that’s not what this is about. This article is about two terrible movies wrapped up in what’s meant to be deep, thought-provoking experiences of an action film. Awesome gift wrap around a turd. Rated R for sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language Running time 124 minutes, Action/Sci-fi/Horror
Compare to: Sunshine (2007), The Thing (2010)
To define what I just watched might take more than a single review. I don’t want to describe the movie with the impression that I’ve never seen anything like it before, but rather to process everything I’ve just watched and decide how much I loved and how much better other aspects could have been. One viewing might not be enough. That being said, Prometheus is one heck of a thing to watch, regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of the Alien series. We can all even further implore the recovery process to forget the last two Alien VS. Predator films. It seems the creators of Prometheus have already, thanfully for us. Read more »
You Gotta See This: Warrior
Posted in You've Gotta See This with tags drama, joel edgerton, mma, nick nolte, review, tom hardy, warrior, zombies ruin everything on 06/05/2012 by TaylorStars: Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, Frank Grillo
Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense mixed martial arts fighting, some language and thematic material, 2011, Action/Drama
Compare to: Rocky (1976), Fighter (2010)
This article should conclude my posts of “Awesome Movies from Last Year that made no Money.” The previous post being here. Two very different movies with no relation to each other aside from the facts that I just covered above. They made no money and I loved them both. Surprisingly, a lot of people hadn’t heard of Warrior (2011) although a lot of people knew of The Fighter (2010). I would’ve figured Warrior to do better with its PG-13 rating, but nope. Both are great movies about underdogs in the competitve fighting world, also involving strained families and the difficulty of achieving your career goal when your own family is enough of a problem already. That Guy- Keith David
Posted in Whatever with tags keith david, the thing, they live, zombies ruin everything on 06/02/2012 by TaylorDo you know this man’s face? Do you?? Of course you do. Now, would you have known his name is you hadn’t seen it in the title? Or have you even put the two together yet? Well, then do it now, I’ll wait. Keith David is a man of many faces, but mostly his own.
He’s been the voice of the Arbiter from the Halo series, the Spawn cartoon (couldn’t have been a better fit) and even the voice for the Navy commercials a few years back. That commercial also has Godsmack in it but try and ignore that. But Keith David is more than just a cool voice. He’s also a cool actor. I consider an actor to be cool if they’re willing to go from being John Carpenter’s go-to guy in movies like The Thing (1982) and They Live (1988), to doing a single line for a character in a cartoon never to be seen again, yet it’s not a cameo. Some would just call that being a small-time actor, and maybe that’s true, but you need those guys all the same. And Keith David is one of those guys who’s been doing that so well for so long, he’s almost famous for it. Almost. Read more »
Movie Review: Snow White and the Huntsman
Posted in Reviews! with tags charlize theron, chris hemsworth, huntsman, kristen stewart, snow white, zombies ruin everything on 06/01/2012 by TaylorStars: Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and brief sensuality, Running time 127 mins, Action/Adventure/Drama
Compare to: Sleepy Hollow (1999), Robin Hood (2010)
For all the remakes and adaptions of comic books and so on, a “sleeper sub-genre” if you will, seems to keep its place in the cinema ranks; I’m speaking of fairy tale adaptions of course. Last year’s Beastly and Red Riding Hood didn’t do too bad financially, but with Snow White, the sub-genre might be getting its big break. Read more »
You Gotta See This: The Man from Nowhere
Posted in You've Gotta See This with tags bin won, korean action, review, the man from nowhere, zombies ruin everything on 05/27/2012 by TaylorStars: Bin Won, Thanayong Wongtrakul, Sae-ron Kim
Rated R for strong bloody violence, pervasive language, drug content and brief nudity, 2010, Action/Drama
Compare to: Leon the Professional (1994), Man on Fire (2004)
I’ve mentioned before about trying to spread out the Korean/subtitled movies on here for the sake of the more casual moviegoer. A lot of people tell me how much they just hate subtitles but if you cancel them out altogether, you’re missing a lot of good stuff. Such is the case for The Man from Nowhere; a movie that needs to be viewed by any fan of action, but especially a viewer who feels like they’ve seen it all. Since the last Korean film overview was a couple months ago, you’re about due, I’d say. Read more »
Another Poster for “The Dark Knight Rises”

Posted in Reviews! with tags josh brolin, men in black 3, reviews, tommy lee jones, will smith, zombies ruin everything on 05/25/2012 by TaylorStars: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson
Rated PG-13 for sci-fi/action violence, and brief suggestive comment, Running time 103 mins, Adventure/Sci-fi/Comedy
Plays like: Ghostbuster II (1989), Galaxy Quest (1999)
If I had been told in 1997 that by 2012, a third Men in Black would be released that year, my ten-year old self probably would’ve thought something along the lines of “That’s forever away!” Now, in 2012, a decade after the sequel, here we are with the third one and I’m thinking, “Men in Black 3? Already?” I know several people thinking the same. Yet here we are, Will Smith still being all crazy and Tommy Lee Jones being all…not. I don’t know if anyone else particularly wanted another sequel but we’ve got it and if the question is, “Is it good?” The answer might be a divided one. Read more »
You Gotta See This: The Lookout
Posted in You've Gotta See This with tags heist, joseph gordon-levitt, matthew goode, noir, the lookout, you gotta, zombies ruin everything on 05/24/2012 by TaylorStars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, Isla Fisher
Rated R for Violence, language, sexual content, Drama/Suspense/ Noir
Compare to: Layer Cake (2004), Harry Brown (2009)
It’s funny how big Joseph Gordon-Levitt has gotten over the past few years. Last year’s 50/50 definitely had it’s moment. His involvement with Christopher Nolan is attaching him to some top-quality material (2010′s Inception, this year’s Dark Knight Rises), while the past few years haven’t been too shabby either. 500 Days of Summer (2009) seems to have solidified him as the practical guy you can relate to while girls just dig his “regular guy” approach to acting. I’d say the ”boy next door” approach but I really hate that term. Nevertheless, in honor of TDKR and September’s Sci-Fi/Action film, Looper, also starring Bruce Willis, it doesn’t seem like JGL is really showing signs of slowing down. That being said, it was hard to choose which of his films to do over the past few years. Angels in the Outfield (1994) was my first choice but maybe something a little more recent?
