Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , on 05/16/2014 by McCutcheon

godzilla

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olson, Ken Wantanabe, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Juliette Binoche, and Big G

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence, Running time 123 minutes minutes, Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi

Compare to: Jaws (1975), Deep Impact (1998), Cloverfield (2008)

Spoiler free!

When creating a movie with giant monsters as the main characters, it’s a tough balance to strike in how much time to devote to your massive CG stars and the flesh-and-blood ones.

But while a film series like Transformers has had a tough maintaining equilibrium between Optimus Prime and all the kids he hangs out with, Godzilla knows that real thrill is in the suspense and what you don’t see. So you can bet that anything that does happen carries as much weight as the G-Man himself. Continue reading

There are a lot of goods and bads to each type. Of course, right? But it’s not like there are any awards for this stuff, it’s pretty much just some weird idea floating around the internet these days. It’s in some books too but I’ve almost forgotten what those are.

So when it comes down to it, who’s the best at what? Who would you most rather have at your side when some frat guy starts talking trash to you in front of your girlfriend? Who’s the type you want backing you up when some dude gives you a snotty look when he’s hanging out with his girlfriend? And why does everything have to be about fighting?

It doesn’t! There’s more variety after the jump! Continue reading

Movie Review: Neighbors

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , on 05/09/2014 by McCutcheon

neigh

Stars: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, Elise & Zoey Vargas

Rated R for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout, Running time 96 minutes minutes, Comedy

Compare to: Neighborhood Watch (2012), We’re the Millers (2013)

It’s good to know that not every Comedy that comes out has to be like The Hangover movies; dumb, raunchy, and focused solely on the glorification of the like.

And though Neighbors is raunchy, it’s also not nearly as stupid as so many movies that think characters acting like idiots is inherently funny. Some might say Neighbors is even intelligent and I wouldn’t argue, but intelligence can have it’s downfalls in such a genre as well. Continue reading

Everyone’s favorite underdog and star of one of the worst movies of all time is unsurprisingly, also the Action staple of personality types: Cold, dangerous, and with a plethora of dead girlfriends in his wake.

With Days of Future Past due out in the coming week, we might as well type the Canucklehead. His personality and adventures are too intriguing to leave untouched. But don’t actually touch him; being prone to berserker barrages and all. Continue reading
