Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Harrison Ford, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Randy Couture, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kellan Lutz, Rhonda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell

Rated PG-13 for violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language, Running time 126 minutes, Action/Adventure

Compare to: The Expendables (2010), The Expendables 2 (2012)

There’s one thing we can all agree before we get to anything else with this movie: If you liked the first two, there’s nothing about The Expendables III that you should find dissatisfying.

Now that that disclaimer is out of the way, we can get to the point and say that this movie is as simplistic and inane as it gets past the glorified cameos we’re calling a cast. From Guardians of the Galaxy set in the furthest reaches of the universe, to the slightly less fun streets of New York in TMNT…to this dreck in Somalia and some war-torn country I’m pretty sure was made up but can’t remember the name, it seems the less fun the location, the less fun the movie. Movie Review: The Expendables 2

Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Liam Hemsworth, Nan Yu, Scott Adkins

Rated R for Strong bloody violence throughout, Running time 102 minutes, Action/Adventure

Compare to: The Transporter (2002), Rambo (2008)

When The Expendables opened in 2010, it seemed like a dream come true for action fanatics; specifically those who were fans of gun toting tough guys, ripped muscles, and one liners after throwing a guy off of a cliff. It met with success and it was inevitable a sequel would be made. So when the trailer revealed Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme would also be added to the cast, man were freaking out. In a positive way, of course. So how does it add up?

If you liked the original, you’ll like this one. If you didn’t like the original, you won’t like this one. If you didn’t like the original other than to just see all your childhood heroes together, shooting unlimited amounts of ammo…that’s how you’ll feel about this one. Continue reading

Jason Statham is Man’s Last Hope

“When I’m not punching people, I’m thinking of people to punch.”

This article was originally going to be about how Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t care about human life. Who else could throw an entire machete straight through a man, sticking him to the wall, make a joke at his expense (“Stick avound”), and then continue murdering the rest of his friends? Only Arnold. That’s just how that guy rolls. Watching the old Total Recall and then the ’73 version of The Mechanic after that, a friend and I got to thinking- there are no more Hollywood tough guys.

We’re not the first ones to think of this, sure, but what exactly are the reasons? The choices? Who’s left out there? Who is worthy? It ain’t Ryan Reynolds, that’s for sure. Is it the times? Has the Macho appeal faded? But I’m not just talking about having huge arms and carrying an anti-aircraft gun, I’m just talking about being a good old fashioned tough guy. The question: Where’s a modern day Eastwood or Bronson? The answer? We don’t have one. And I don’t know how to feel about it. Continue reading
