Is Don Jon’s Excessive Use of Porn Justitied?

Don’t you just love sitting in the theater with your significant other, watching the movie of your choice when suddenly bam! POW! Boobs and butts are all over the place!

I have a tendency in those moments to push my seat back as far as it will go and peer out of my peripheral so as to gauge the reaction of my loved one, who is now undoubtedly shaking their head (mentally) as they think “He had to pick THIS one, didn’t he?”

But can you argue for it’s decision to show much of what the main character watches? Continue reading

Movie Review: Looper

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , on 09/28/2012 by Taylor Holt

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Noah Segan, Pierce Gagnon, Jeff Daniels

Rated R for strong violence, language, some sexuality/nudity and drug content , Running time 118 minutes, Action/Thriller/Sci-Fi

Compare to: Deja Vu (2006), Inception (2010)

I’m going to do my best to not build this movie up too much so as not to higher anyone’s expectations on what this film is like. Put simply though, Looper is the most intelligent example of an Action movie not involving Batman since 2010’s Inception. Director Rian Johnson has put together a movie that has a deeper subtext spilling out of the seams with every scene, every line.

It’s everything you’d want in a futuristic thriller, provided you’re prepared to think. At the very least, you can appreciate the well-crafted visuals. Continue reading

Movie Review: Premium Rush

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , , , on 08/25/2012 by Taylor Holt

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dania Ramirez, Michael Shannon, Wole Parks, Jamie Chung

Rated PG-13 for some violence, intense action sequences and language, Running time 91 minutes, Action/Thriller

Compare to: Cellular (2004), 16 Blocks (2006)

I’ve go to admit, I hadn’t heard of this one until about a month ago and didn’t realize it was coming out until a few days ago. That being said, I was still interested despite the premise being about “a guy who rides a bike.” As far as this movie’s concerned, that’s as simplistic a statement as just saying Bobby Fischer played chess.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt just knows how to pick roles and this movie is no exception. It’s fast, funny, exciting, and being that theaters will be slow this weekend, it doesn’t waste your time. I can’t say for certain whether or not this is even going to make any money, though I do think it deserves any attention it will get, if not more. Continue reading

Trailers, Whoop Whoop

Posted in Whatever with tags , , , , , on 06/29/2012 by Taylor Holt

I think it’s pretty cool that as influenced by kung-fu films as Wu Tang Clan’s music has been over the years, veteran member RZA is finally writing, directing, and starring in his own. If you didn’t know, he’s already been playing his hand in acting in films you wouldn’t necessarily expect him to be in. Funny People (2009) and Due Date (2010) just to name a couple. He also plays a kind of parody of himself in the show Californication as rapper/actor “Samurai Apocalypse.” If it hadn’t been for Channing Tatum, we’d be seeing him today as Blind Master in G.I. JOE: Retaliation. Ah, well. Even if MWTIF ends up sucking, it’ll still be cool to watch in one way or another. If the embedding didn’t work, just click here to watch.

Now this is on my Top Five of the year to watch for the rest of the year, a list I’ll be posting later on this week. The trailer will tell you everything you need to know, but it’s about thirty seconds shorter than your average spot, letting me know that they’re not planning to give away their entire movie before it’s released *cough cough* Amazing Spider-Man *cough*. Rian Johnson is a director that just knows how to make a movie based on his previous films. Some action, some suspense, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels. We now have a smart action film. Emily Blunt don’t hurt nothin’ neither.

You Gotta See This: The Lookout

Posted in You've Gotta See This with tags , , , , , , on 05/24/2012 by Taylor Holt

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, Isla Fisher

Rated R for Violence, language, sexual content, Drama/Suspense/ Noir

Compare to: Layer Cake (2004), Harry Brown (2009)

It’s funny how big Joseph Gordon-Levitt has gotten over the past few years. Last year’s 50/50 definitely had it’s moment. His involvement with Christopher Nolan is attaching him to some top-quality material (2010’s Inception, this year’s Dark Knight Rises), while the past few years haven’t been too shabby either. 500 Days of Summer (2009) seems to have solidified him as the practical guy you can relate to while girls just dig his “regular guy” approach to acting. I’d say the “boy next door” approach but I really hate that term. Nevertheless, in honor of TDKR and September’s Sci-Fi/Action film, Looper, also starring Bruce Willis, it doesn’t seem like JGL is really showing signs of slowing down. That being said, it was hard to choose which of his films to do over the past few years. Angels in the Outfield (1994) was my first choice but maybe something a little more recent? Continue reading
