It’s not often characters are faced with the problem of fighting off their own clone. There are a few characters here and there but it’s even less of a cliche that a major character’s clone/”son” is fighting them on behalf of the original’s own values. There’s a pretty famous scenario that somewhat resembles it but not done in such a modern fashion as it is in the Metal Gear series.

Big Boss and Solid Snake’s relationship may be one of the most complex in entertainment, let alone fiction. And it’s deep enough that to just call it entertainment almost feels like an understatement. There are many great rivalries, but few can compare to the level of simultaneous disdain and attachment opposing characters have for each other. Continue reading

It’s not until we’ve started doing podcasts that I realize how much I actually bring up Metal Gear Solid. Aaand seeing as how I type characters, it was only a matter of time before Snake was here. The real issue when it comes to typing action-oriented characters is finding those that aren’t ISTP or ESTP.

But in any case, Snake fits the mold pretty well while actually having reasons behind his stone cold exterior. Spoilers to both The Metal Gear Series and The Winter Soldier Movie.

This should probably be my last Winter Soldier-related article but what can I say? When a movie is good, it’s going to stick with you.

But while watching the film, it could be helped to notice several things sticking out as…familiar.

What do you mean Taylor? This story was completely original! You can LEAVE AMERICA if you don’t like it!

No, no…it’s not that I didn’t like it, this latest Marvel movie is the best in the series by far. But I have suspicions that another super soldier has already been through a similar predicament. Continue reading

The Greatest Secret Agents Known to Fiction

Posted in Whatever with tags , , , , , , on 11/15/2012 by McCutcheon

Secret agents are great aren’t they?

Out of all the spies you know (or don’t), throughout history, they will never compare to a spy you know in the world of fiction. Once James Bond set that bar, there was no raising it, only trying to get to it. With Skyfall having been released last week, it seems appropriate to compare some of the greatest fictional spies of all time. There were so many to list, only a few were chosen to represent the more discreet side of the ka-razy world of fiction. Seriously, there’s so many secret agents and spies it’s like finding pennies on the ground. From the unappreciated to the pretty-freaking-obvious.

No particular order by the way, that’s all up to you folks. You won’t see Austin Powers on the list, just to let you know ahead of time. I’m still sick the impressions. Continue reading
