Movie Review: Savages

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , , on 07/07/2012 by Taylor Holt

Stars: Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Salma Hayek, Benecio Del Toro, and John Travolta

Rated R for strong brutal and grisly violence, some graphic sexuality, nudity, drug use and language throughout, 127 Minutes, Crime/Drama/Thriller

Compare to: True Romance (1993), Street Kings (2008)

Oh, Savages. What a simple-minded, egotistical, violent tirade you are. When it comes to Oliver Stone these days, it’s just tough to have an open mind. The writer/director seems to be interested in very few new ideas and seems completely content in socio-political commentary and/or meaningless violence with the thinly layered pretense of a purpose.

I can see Savages going down as one of those movies that gains a cult fan base through people who want to live the lives of the characters but not actually understanding the types of consequences the characters’ actions would actually have. That’s in part because I’m not sure if Stone understands the types of actions they would have. Much like 2003’s Blow, Savages treats the subject matter at hand as something damning, while simultaneously making you think of the characters as admirable for going to the depths that they do. They all just seemed retarded to me. Continue reading

This Movie Suuucks: The Covenant

In dishonor of Hollywood’s recent attempts at shoving Taylor Kitsch (John Carter, Battleship) in our face, I’m going to heckle The Covenant. I have hated this movie ever since I saw it in theaters in the summer of ’06. I remember it well because I was actually paying for movies then which made it a complete waste of my time and money. Movie Review: Battleship

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , , , on 05/18/2012 by Taylor Holt

Stars: Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, Tadanobu Asano, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, action and destruction, and for language, Running time 131 minutes, Action/Adeventure/Sci-fi

Plays like: Transformers: Rise of the Fallen (2009), Skyline (2010)

Sometimes I give a movie a hard time from the trailer because it looks ridiculous, among other things, but then I watch it and have to take some of the negative things back. Transformers (2007) is a good example. Heck, even Avengers falls into this category; I just didn’t think I’d like it from the trailer, but what do you know? It was actually really good.

From the trailer alone, I assumed it would be full of explosions, cheesy one liners, forced melodrama, and a senseless plot and in the previously mentioned movies, I was wrong. There was more to them than that. Yet, in Battleship’s case, I hit the nail on the freaking head. This movie is loud, obnoxious and no, it is not fun unless you plan on making fun of it with your friends. No, I do not condone that in a movie unless it is only you and your friends.

But jeez, would it be tempting anyway. Continue reading

Movie Review: John Carter of Mars

Posted in Reviews! with tags , , , , , on 03/08/2012 by Taylor Holt

When I look back at all the movies that have come out over the years that people were comparing in some way to Star Wars, it really adds up. Especially if you’re counting all the movies people have specifically said, “It’s the Star Wars of our generation.” With John Carter coming out tomorrow, certain sources say that according to George Lucas himself, without John Carter, there would be no Star Wars. Well, I’ve seen John Carter and if you’re looking for a new Star Wars at all, you’ll still be looking. Not that it’s bad; it’s just not that good. Continue reading
