Movie Review: A Walk Among the Tombstones

Rated R for strong violence, disturbing images, language and brief nudity, Running time 113 minutes, Action/Crime/Thriller

Compare to: Death Wish (1974), Ransom (1996)

Liam Neeson being in a movie these days usually means two things: Someone or some people will be kidnapped or taken hostage with the second sure thing being Liam Neeson will indefinitely beat some people up to make sure everyone is safe.

But while the majority of Neeson action/thrillers are worth watching maybe once, Tombstones has a bit more going for it. There’s not a massive secret waiting to be revealed every other corner, but that gets old anyway, doesn’t it? Continue reading →

Movie Review: The Purge: Anarchy

Rated R for strong disturbing violence, and for language Running time 130 minutes, Action/Horror/Thriller

Compare to: A Perfect Getaway (2009), You’re Next (2013)

After any movie on a three million dollar budget makes eighty nine million back, you’re bound to see a sequel regardless of quality. And though the first felt much more ambitious in idea than execution, a further explanation or examination of this masochistic future seemed possible, should the perceived mistakes of the first film be corrected.

So are the previous errors corrected? Sure, provided you can accept the premise in the first place. Once you get past your outlook on humanity, anything is possible in these movies. It’s what’s entertaining and terrible at the same time about them. Continue reading →

Movie Review: The Possession

Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving violence and disturbing sequences , Running time 92 minutes, Horror/Thriller/Supernatural

Compare to: The Unborn (2009), The Haunting in Conneticut (2009)

It’s hard to hate another PG-13 Horror movie after you’ve seen the garbage that is The Apparition , which opened last week to only 800 theaters and deserved even less than that. After watching it, I was ready for whatever would come out the following week. So here we are, one week later and now The Possession has surfaced; a movie that offers a few genuinely freaky moments with zero originality saved for a couple points of our villain’s origin.

For the sake of keeping spoilers to myself, and just because there’s not really not much to tell that you can’t figure out for yourself, I’m going to try to keep this short as I have other films where every bit of the story could be giving something away.
